Day 10 -- When in Rome

Our first full day in Rome was perhaps the best day of our vacation. In the morning, Maggie and Bill ventured out for a cappuccino at a cafe in Piazza Navona. Then we all walked over to the Trevi Fountain to toss in the coins that would ensure our return to Rome. Maggie was delighted by the fountain, constantly dipping her hand in and matting her hair with the water. Next we walked over to the Spanish Steps, which Maggie proudly climbed. We then spent a wonderful and relaxing hour or so in Villa Borghese, a wonderful park with tremendous views of Rome and the Vatican. Maggie went on a carousel (twice) and kicked her beach ball around the park. Maggie napped in the backpack while we walked across Rome and had lunch near Campo de Fiore. Maggie was hungry, and ate nearly half of her Mom's pizza. After another nap back at the apartment, we wandered over to Trattoria del Polloro for an incredible meal. We didn't have a reservation, but the hostess checked with the owner, who gave Maggie a big smile and gave us the green light. This unusual restaurant has no menu -- everyone is served the same thing. We enjoyed a feast of antipasti (fennel, lentils, prosciutto, salami, meatballs, supli), pasta, salad, meat, cheese, and -- for dessert -- ricotta pie and a shot of strawberry juice. It was truly an amazing spread, and perhaps the best meal of our trip. After dinner, we walked through Piazza Navona, which is gorgeous with the fountains lit. Rome is amazingly beautiful at night. It occurred to us that we may have kept Maggie up past her bedtime when she suddenly stopped and laid down in the middle of the piazza, much to the amusement and horror of the hordes of tourists.
